1. Mixed nerve: mainly sensory
2. Arises in the medulla: leaves through the jugular foramen
3. Sensory: tonsillar fossa, pharynx (afferent part of the gag reflex) & carotid sinus
4. Taste: posterior 1/3 of the tongue
5. Motor: stylopharyngeus
6. Autonomic: parotid gland
